Britten looks back to Renaissance composer John Dowland for inspiration in his variations for solo viola and orchestra. Listen for sorrowful, yet beautiful paeans to lost love. Schumann's "Rhenish" Symphony recalls a visit to the Rhineland, where he encountered bucolic countryside and the solemn splendor of Cologne's gothic cathedral.
