About the Play

A hilarious and provocative meditation on individuality, sexism, colonialism, sexuality,
and theatricality. Beginning as a gender-switching Victorian farce about desire in
colonial Africa, it transforms into a contemporary urban tale of the search for identity in a
complex and ever-changing world. Acceptance of oneself and of others is at the heart of
this amazing romp. Caryl Churchill thrusts her characters into a maelstrom of human
vulnerability with humor and vitality. Cloud 9 is about the definition of love and family in
the face of social norms and expectations.
