Simply put appropriate bait into the applicator reservoir, locate tunnels by probing around fresh dirt mounds and deposit bait deep in each tunnel by lifting up on top handle. HAND APPLICATION
For large and heavily infested areas, however, trapping is both too time-consuming and too expensive in comparison with the use of toxic baits.
To poison gophers, the main runway must be located by probing about 12 to 18 inches from the mount on the side of the horseshoe-shaped depression with a pointed stick, hoe handle, length of gas pipe or similar device. When the runway is found, bait is dropped into the hole made by the probe and then the hole is covered with a clod of earth so that no light leaks into the tunnel. It is usually necessary to place poison only near the two freshest mounds in a burrow system. The best bait and poisons vary with the locale and the type of gopher. Some gophers take grain baits, such as wheat or maize, best while others are more attracted by cubed vegetable baits, such as carrots and sweet potatoes. A list of approved baits can be obtained from your state department of agricultural and typically can be found online. Your county extension agents can also provide this information.
The time required for hand application can be reduced considerably by using a hand applicator, such as the Gopher Getter Jr., that drops a preset quantity of bait into the tunnel.
